God's Law: A Burden or Loving Instruction?

Have you ever wondered why some people hesitate to turn to God because they believe Christianity is all about rules?

Many people hear the word law and immediately think of legislation, restrictions, punishment, and someone telling them what they can and cannot do.

But is this how we should understand God's Word?

God does give commandments. However, His instructions are not simply a list of restrictions designed to make our lives miserable. They teach us how to walk in His ways, avoid destructive paths, and live according to His wisdom.

God is not trying to deprive us of a good life. He is teaching us what a good life looks like.

What Does God's Law Actually Teach Us?

Psalm 1 gives us an important insight into how we should approach God's Word.

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful." - Psalm 1:1–2 (KJV)

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

Notice that the psalm describes a person who delights in the law of the LORD.

Why would someone delight in something they believed existed only to restrict them?

The answer is that God's instruction gives us wisdom. It teaches us to recognise what is good, what is destructive, and what leads us away from Him.

His Word helps us understand how to live, how to treat others, and how to make decisions that align with His will.

Rather than seeing His instruction as something intended to rob us of freedom, we can learn to recognise the wisdom behind it.

God Warns Us Because Our Choices Matter

Imagine a father warning his child not to touch a burning fire.

Is he trying to control the child, or is he trying to protect them from being hurt?

The warning does not exist to deprive the child of happiness. It exists because the father understands a danger that the child may not yet recognise.

In a similar way, God's instructions teach us to recognise dangers we might otherwise overlook.

Consider what happens when we ignore wisdom and follow every desire, emotion, or temptation that comes our way.

We can damage relationships, make destructive decisions, and experience consequences that could have been avoided.

God's Word warns us about these paths because our choices matter.

His instructions do not make every decision easy, but they teach us to choose wisely.

God does not promise a life without hardship. Rather, He teaches us how to walk with Him through life instead of being led by the world's ways.

Two Paths, Two Different Outcomes

Psalm 1 does not merely tell us to read God's Word. It shows us why the counsel we follow matters.

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” - Psalm 1:3 (KJV)

The person who delights in God's instruction is compared to a tree planted beside rivers of water.

Think about that picture.

A tree needs a reliable source of water to grow, remain nourished, and produce fruit. In the same way, we need to remain rooted in God's wisdom if we want our lives to be shaped by His truth.

The world often encourages us to follow our own desires, pursue whatever feels right, and define good and evil according to our own understanding.

But feelings can mislead us. Desires can change. What appears beneficial in the moment can ultimately lead us into harm.

God's Word provides a foundation that is not dependent on our changing emotions or the world's shifting standards.

Psalm 1 contrasts this rooted life with the way of the ungodly, which does not have the same firm foundation.

The question is not simply whether we want freedom. It is which path we are choosing to follow and where that path leads.

God Wants Us to Walk With Him, Not Away From Him

Sometimes, people reject God's ways before they have taken the time to understand His heart.

They see His commandments as restrictions on their happiness. They assume that following Him means giving up everything they enjoy and living under a constant list of rules.

But following God is not about treating His Word as a meaningless checklist.

It is about learning to know Him, trust His wisdom, and allow His instruction to shape the way we live.

Consider these words from Scripture:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” - Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

God calls us to trust Him rather than assume that our own understanding is always sufficient.

Why?

Because we do not see everything He sees. We do not always recognise the consequences of our choices, and we can mistake what we want for what is actually good for us.

His instruction invites us to walk with Him, trusting that His wisdom is greater than our own.

And when we begin to understand this, obedience becomes more than following a rule. It becomes part of a relationship with the One whose wisdom we are learning to trust.

Conclusion: Learn to See God's Word Differently

What if, instead of asking, “Why does God tell me what I cannot do?” we began asking, “What is God teaching me, and why does His wisdom matter?”

This change in perspective can make a difference in how we approach Scripture.

God's commandments are not meaningless restrictions. His Word teaches us to recognise what is right, turn away from what is destructive, and walk in a way that honours Him.

Psalm 1 reminds us that the counsel we follow matters. We can allow the world's thinking to shape our lives, or we can become rooted in the wisdom of God's Word.

We are not promised that following God will make life free from difficulty. But we are given His instruction to guide us through it.

God is not asking us to trust His wisdom because we already understand everything. He is asking us to trust Him enough to learn from Him.

So before you dismiss God's Word as a collection of rules, take the time to understand the heart behind His instruction.

You may discover that what you once viewed as a restriction is actually wisdom you needed.
